2D vs 3D: Virtual Tabletops vs VIVERSE Worlds

Most popular virtual tabletops, like Roll20 or Foundry VTT, deliver their adventures in 2D. They’re excellent for managing maps, tokens, and dice mechanics, but they don’t always capture the feeling of being there

VIVERSE Worlds lets you step into a 3D environment

  • Immersive spaces with depth, lighting, and atmosphere
  • A stage for storytelling, not just a board for mechanics
  • VRM support, so you can import and appear as your VTuber model or RPG character
  • Ready-made backdrops for streaming, TikTok, or YouTube

Think of Roll20 and Foundry as the rules of play, while VIVERSE Worlds gives you the scenery and stagecraft. Together, they can make your campaign both functional and cinematic.

Extra Tip for RPG Players: If you have a VRM of your TTRPG character, or stream as a 3D VTuber, you can import that file directly as an avatar into VIVERSE Worlds. This lets you step into the cathedral, apothecary, or ruins as your character, creating an even bridge between your story and your stream.

Build Your Own Backdrops

Don’t see the perfect match for your campaign yet? With our drag-and-drop World Builder in Create, you can design and decorate a custom space to serve as your RPG backdrop. Start with a template, add 3D props, and tailor the mood to whether you need a cozy tavern, a sprawling fortress, or a cosmic chamber for your next adventure.

A Glimpse Beyond: Building Worlds with World Labs’ Marble

If you want to experiment even further, World Labs is exploring new ways to world-build through AI-prompted generation and 3D Gaussian splatting. Their Beta platform, Marble, aims “to lift AI models from the 2D plane of pixels to full 3D worlds — both virtual and real.”

In our early testing, Marble feels perfect for dungeon masters, streamers, and VTubers. Worlds can be generated through text-to-3D, image-to-3D, or by starting from presets as a base prompt. They can then be exported and turned into VIVERSE Worlds for a customized experience.

While still in Beta, Marble shows clear potential for use with VIVERSE. We’re confident that, once publicly available, you’ll be able to use Marble to make dynamic spaces that match your campaign, persona, or channel theme through interactive streaming backdrops, TTRPG stages, or virtual hangout spaces.

Enjoy this quick Marble demonstration, captured by the VIVERSE team, showing world generation for a dungeon-like environment.

Stay tuned! We’ll explore this tool in more detail in an upcoming post.
