W.A.N.D. Project Joins VIVERSE: Craft Spells, Save Tokyo, Play Free

Aliens have invaded Tokyo, and the city’s last line of defense is a sorceress with a wand. The good news? That wand does whatever you design it to do. Starting September 28, W.A.N.D. Project joins the VIVERSE lineup of premium titles as a free browser game. It’s regularly $9.99 on Steam, but on VIVERSE, it’s free with instant play on desktop and mobile. The full game comes from developer The Knights of Unity.

A free roguelike bullet hell where every run is about stacking elements into bigger, stranger spells. Tokyo won’t defend itself.

What Is W.A.N.D. Project?

W.A.N.D. Project is a fast-paced roguelike where you craft custom spells to save a futuristic Tokyo from aliens. You play as a magic-wielding sorceress sworn to defend the city from a monstrous invasion. Along the way, you unlock more sorceresses, each with her own stats and abilities.

Polish studio The Knights of Unity developed the game. It first launched on November 29, 2024, on Steam, GOG, and Nintendo Switch. As the team explains it, “We wanted to blend the survivor-genre arcade experience with player expression and a puzzle-logic minigame.”

A Bullet Heaven Roguelike with a Twist

If you’ve played Vampire Survivors, you’ll feel right at home. In both games, huge waves of enemies swarm you while your attacks fill the screen. Many players call this style “bullet heaven,” though Steam lists this one as a roguelike bullet hell. Its store page also pitches it to fans of Brotato and Death Must Die, so if you’re a fan of those, you’ll definitely want to try your hand at W.A.N.D. Project’s spellcrafting to melt your enemies.

The action plays out in top-down arenas. The core controls are simple: you move and you dash. Each attempt is called a run, and every run is a chance to try something new. But instead of picking upgrades from a list, you build your spells like a puzzle.

How Spellcrafting Works

Think of spellcrafting like solving a puzzle. The pieces you choose, and how you connect them, change what your spell does.

In spellcrafting, those pieces are called modules. Every spell starts with a casting module, which decides what triggers it, like dashing, standing still, or firing automatically. From there, you add more modules to shape what the spell does, like dealing fire damage or weakening enemies. You buy modules with Essence, which drops from defeated aliens. Essence can also unlock extra space on your spell-crafting board.

With more than 100 magical elements to build from, the possible combos add up fast.

Here’s an example. Say you have a fireball that fires every few seconds. You could change it to fire only when you’re standing still. Then you could add lightning that strikes nearby enemies and a chance to heal yourself. Want a storm of fast, light attacks instead? Or one slow, powerful blast? It’s your call.

Once you’ve got the basics down, the Forge adds another layer. You can merge two identical modules into a stronger, higher-tier version. You can also trade two different modules of the same tier for a random module one tier up. If the shop’s offerings don’t fit your build, you can reroll them for new options.

For the team at The Knights of Unity, that freedom is the whole point. “Two players can find the same pieces and end up with completely different spells. Finding the combination that suddenly clears the whole screen is the heart of the game. You didn’t just pick it, you figured it out.”

No Two Runs Alike

Spells are only one part of your build. Each wand you unlock packs its own special powers, so a new wand can shake up your whole strategy.

Maps keep you on your toes, too. Each one brings its own look, enemy types, and objectives. Some levels ask you to hit specific goals instead of simply surviving. Make it far enough, and you’ll face bosses with their own unique mechanics.

Then there’s overtime. In the final moments of a level, your spells get a boost and fire nonstop. It’s your build’s big moment to show off.

Runs start at normal difficulty. During continuous runs, you can raise the difficulty for an extra challenge and more points.

Tips for Your First Run

  • Build around your triggers. If a spell fires when you dash, plan on dashing a lot.
  • Don’t forget board space. New modules are exciting, but extra room lets you combine more of them.
  • Read the objective. Some maps ask for more than survival, so check your goal before you charge in.

Meet the Studio Behind the Magic

The Knights of Unity is an indie studio based in Wrocław, Poland. The studio is also known for Tools Up!, a co-op game about renovating apartments.

Bringing the game to VIVERSE took real work. The team rewrote its rendering for the web, added touch controls, and optimized it to run better on phones. “We wanted to reach players who might never find the game on Steam,” the team says. They also saw VIVERSE as a natural fit: “VIVERSE gave us a platform built for browser-based games, with an audience already looking for them.”
