Inside The Blu: Expedition Taiwan, a Free-Roam VR Experience Powered by VIVERSE
Running a large free-roam VR experience is one of the hardest jobs in location-based entertainment. Dozens of guests move on foot through many zones, all at the same time. Every headset has to be ready. Every group has to stay on pace. One small snag can stall the whole room.
At VIVELAND in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, The Blu: Expedition Taiwan shows how it’s done. The multi-user attraction runs on VIVERSE’s group experience technology, GEM, at this venue. Here’s how the experience comes together, and a look at the tech working quietly behind the scenes.

A free-roam VR experience through Taiwan’s ocean
The Blu: Expedition Taiwan invites visitors to walk straight into Taiwan’s waters. No wetsuit. No screen between you and the sea. Guests explore on foot as a group, from coral reefs and shipwrecks down to the open deep.
The journey is guided by BT-11, a friendly AI robot, on a mission to protect Taiwan’s endangered white dolphins. Along the way, visitors meet blue whales, hammerhead sharks, and clouds of glowing sea life. They wade through caves lit by “blue tears,” a real bioluminescent glow found in Taiwan’s waters. Small interactions reward curiosity, like a hand gesture that triggers a dive computer to scan a passing creature and display key facts about it.

It’s a co-production by VIVERSE, international immersive studio Wevr, and supported by the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan. The result blends marine education, local culture, and hands-on play into a single shared adventure.
According to Joseph Lin, General Manager of VIVERSE at HTC, in a joint announcement with Wevr, “We are proud to partner with Wevr on The Blu: Expedition Taiwan. By combining HTC’s cutting-edge XR technology with Wevr’s masterful storytelling, we are creating powerful experiences that bring families and friends together while highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans.”

Where and when to see it
The Blu: Expedition Taiwan runs from May 27 to November 27, 2026. You’ll find it at the VIVELAND VR Theme Park, Pier-7 Warehouse, in Kaohsiung. It’s built for a day or half-day visit, and tickets are available through iBon, with more options to follow.

Why free-roam VR is hard to run at scale
Free-roam VR is different from seated VR. Guests aren’t seated or confined to a small boundary. They walk through physical space, room to room, while the story moves around them.
That freedom is the magic. It’s also the operational challenge. A venue has to route many groups at once, keep them from crossing paths, and reset each headset between sessions. During busy hours, the margin for error is thin.
This is exactly the problem GEM was built to solve.
The technology running behind the scenes
Keeping a free-roam attraction like this running smoothly takes real backend coordination. At VIVELAND, that coordination currently runs on GEM (Group Experience Management), which handles group flow, device readiness, and real-time oversight, so the operations team can focus on guests instead of logistics.
VIVERSE plans to formally announce GEM and share more detail on how venues can use it. For now, The Blu: Expedition Taiwan offers an early look at what it can do.
A model for location-based entertainment
The Blu: Expedition Taiwan is more than a single attraction. It’s a working example of what large-scale, free-roam VR can be when the operations are solid.
According to Neville Spiteri, co-founder and CEO of Wevr and Executive Producer of The Blu, in the same announcement, “This is not merely about watching. It is about having a transformative immersive experience with your friends and family. The Blu has always tapped into the unique power of XR technology to move people emotionally and create memories. With The Blu: Expedition Taiwan, we bring people face-to-face with Taiwan’s majestic marine species and habitats in a shared experience.”
For operators and creators, the takeaway is simple. With the right system underneath, a complex multi-user experience can run reliably at-scale. GEM provides that foundation, so teams can spend their energy on the story and the guest.

FAQ
What is LBE?
LBE stands for location-based entertainment. It means an experience you have to visit a physical venue to enjoy, like an arcade, escape room, or VR attraction. The Blu: Expedition Taiwan is one example, since it only runs at VIVELAND in Kaohsiung.
What is a free-roam VR experience?
A free-roam VR experience lets guests walk through physical space while wearing a headset. Instead of sitting, they move room to room as the story unfolds around them.
What is VIVERSE GEM?
GEM (Group Experience Management) is a VIVERSE system designed to coordinate guest flow, device readiness, and real-time operational oversight for large-scale VR venues. It also streamlines multi-venue deployment by allowing VR experiences to be flexibly adapted to each venue’s physical layout. This flexibility significantly reduces the manual effort traditionally required to reconfigure scene dimensions, positioning, and guest flow for each installation.
